Rumor – Volodymyr Zelensky sold weapons sent to Ukraine on the black market.

Analysis

If you follow Boatos.org, you may have noticed that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has been a frequent target of fake news in recent days.

Today we will discuss an accusation claiming that Zelensky has been selling weapons provided by the United States on the black market. According to messages, these weapons are now in the hands of guerrillas in Syria, drug cartels, and other criminal organizations.

The story gained traction through a journalist aligned with the far-right in the United States and reached Brazil through social media posts and far-right blogs. Below, check out two versions of the shared message:

Did Zelensky sell weapons received by Ukraine on the black market?

No. There is no evidence or indication that Volodymyr Zelensky sold weapons supplied by the U.S. on the black market. The claim is based on misinformation widely spread by Russian channels in the past and later amplified by far-right media in the U.S. This Newsweek article states that there is no indication that weapons have been diverted to criminal groups.

Does the journalist who accused the Ukrainian president have proof?

Journalist Tucker Carlson, who made the allegation, has not presented concrete evidence. Additionally, Carlson has a history of spreading conspiracy theories and fake news. An article from NPR explains how his extremist narratives have influenced Fox News and conservative politics in the U.S.

Are there other recent fake news stories about the Ukrainian president?

Yes. This is not the first time Zelensky has been the target of misinformation. Other rumors have claimed that he punched Donald Trump, that he owned a luxury house in the U.S., and even that he was dancing after an argument with the former U.S. president.
