Contested by the opposition, the reelection of President Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela intensified the contradictions and confrontations between progressive forces and reactionary and conservative forces allied to imperialism in the American continent.
Manipulated by the United States, the Organization of American States (OAS) published a report on Tuesday (30) that does not recognize the election results, proclaimed on Monday (29) by the National Electoral Council (CNE) of the country, and still maintains that the opposition candidate, Edmundo González, was the winner.
The position of the entity sparked indignation among progressive leaders, including Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador, who has been cautious on this issue and advocates, like Brazil, for the presentation of poll results to resolve doubts.
Fake News
“What is the basis for the OAS to conclude that the other candidate won? Where is the evidence for this?” Obrador asked.
According to the Mexican president, the OAS “is not a democratic or autonomous body” and “does not represent the countries of America.”
It is, in his words, an “appendix of a faction, an organization that must be reformed, since it is useless, it only serves to worsen the problems.”
The faction to which Obrador refers is actually embodied by the neoliberal right and the extreme right, which operate under the command of Washington.
It is the US that manipulates the OAS, where Cuba, for this reason, has no seat. This truth came to light, once again, after the dramatic events that culminated in the military coup that, in 2019, deposed the recently re-elected president of Bolivia, Evo Morales.
Without presenting any evidence or proof, this same OAS – a vassal of the US imperialists – alleged the occurrence of fraud in the elections that resulted in Morales’ victory to justify the coup d’état that ended up removing the indigenous leader from the Presidency and plunging the country into chaos.
The role of the United States in the sad episode was evident and widely denounced.
The objective of imperialism in Bolivia is to seize lithium. The Latin American country has the world’s largest reserves of this strategic raw material and has already reached an agreement with China and Russia for its exploration, which Washington does not tolerate. In Venezuela, the obvious objective is oil.
The OAS, an organization that has been manipulated by the United States since its creation, lacks credibility, but continues to serve the same anti-democratic and imperialist purposes. Its objective now is to stimulate the coup movement that the Venezuelan extreme right is trying to create and that has a clear kinship with the fateful January 8 in Brasilia.
Maduro’s re-election is of extraordinary importance for progressive forces in Latin America and, in particular, for the struggle of democrats to stop the rise of the far right in Latin America. Although today’s neo-fascists present themselves as defenders of freedom of expression, they are in fact enemies of democracy and harbingers of barbarism, as was demonstrated on January 8 in Brazil after President Lula’s inauguration.
Respect Venezuela
Cuban-Panamanian businessman and lawyer Humberto Pérez highlighted in a message that the results are scrutinized and compared with due transparency, and it is important to highlight that the electoral systems have been attacked by digital means to delay this process. Venezuela is being asked to do something that is not required of any country.
“It is sad and shameful to see how information is manipulated based on geopolitical interests and regional control, demonstrated in the constant attempts of interference by influential people in politics, heads of state and representatives of international organizations who lend themselves to media games and confusion. The same ones who do not allow this to be applied in their policies and in their countries,” he stressed.
The fight against imperialism and for the right to self-determination of peoples and nations requires, at this time, the recognition and defense of the reelection of Nicolás Maduro in Venezuela, against neoliberalism, the extreme right and imperialism.
In this battle, hesitation is not a good advisor. Hesitant positions serve the anti-democratic and neocolonial purposes of what is, today, the greatest enemy of the people: the United States.
